Why Bluey is the best kids (and adults) animated show ever

Recently, I came across a feature on the Today Show on how Bluey teaches children to give their moms time to decompress.

And, that got me thinking about all the many life lessons that I think my daughter, Arya, got from Bluey such as always wanting to help me, "Mamma if Savita didi doesn't come, you tell me. I will clean the house." Or another episode where Bluey and Bandit (her father) take an injured parakeet to the vet and soon later, Arya told an injured cat in the building, "Don't worry, Mamma and I will take you to the vet."

Not Arya alone, but my husband is a huge fan of the show and has watched every episode, often without Arya. It has underlying messages in every episode that resonates with adults. For instance, in one episode, Chilli Heeler (Bluey's mom) talks to her friend about how she feels she's failing as a mother but her friend seems to have aced it. Her friend says this isn't true. Plus she has a lot more experience with ten children. There's another episode that follows the emotional journey of moving to a new home.

Since its premiere in 2018 in Australia, Bluey quickly became the most-watched children's program across all channels, dominating viewership in 2018 and 2019. In 2023, Bluey was recognized as the second most-streamed show in the U.S., only behind Suits. In 2024 alone, Bluey accumulated 55.6 billion minutes watched on Disney+ in the United States, making it the most-watched show of the year across all streaming platforms.

The colours used in the animation are not as vibrant as, for example Cocomelon, making it less addictive. Plus, it's one of those rare shows where the protagonist Bluey is a girl and not a boy. It's also a non-American hit TV show (it's Australian), which is not very common. Critics have praised its realistic depiction of parenting, with Bandit and Chilli serving as positive role models for children and parents alike. We love Bluey. And, I hope we see many more such shows in the near future
