We watched IC814, the new TV series about the Indian Airlines highjack from Kathmandu to Delhi that lasted over 8 days, went to multiple air spaces and countries before landing in Kandahar. And, was one of the toughest negotiations where lives of innocent travelers were exchanged for the release of imprisoned terrorists who reportedly were very involved in future terrorist attacks such as Mumbai 26/11, WTC 9/11 amongst others.

I found this show refreshing - its openness in showcasing the gray realities of decision making, government bureaucracy, a masterclass in negotiation and has some fantastic lessons in leadership.

1. Clearly, the Flight captain was in charge of his crew, commanded their respect and he knew he had to prioritise the lives of his passengers over everything else. He was ready to get his hands dirty, fixing even stinky toilets as needed. Having clear guiding principles eliminates indecision, esp at gunpoint.

2. There were definitely many lapses in intelligence due to plain old bureaucracy. But there was the intent to fix this too. You saw the government bureaucrats as they really are, humans and not superhumans who try, make decisions that work and don't work.

3. Sometimes, it's ok to hide facts or truth- there were many decisions made by the journalists to hide certain fact so as to not compromise ongoing government negotiations and add to public tension.

4. Negotiations are complicated and a psychological test in patience. And, there's often no right answer. How do you take a call on the lives of 160 passengers at stake vs trading the release of 3 terrorists? lt reminded me of this famous class taught by Harvard Prof Michael Sandel on Justice. Watch video here.

In summary, a good watch and a coming of age in Indian TV shows.
