Our first podcast recording at The Kind, JP Nagar
Our first podcast recording at The Kind, JP Nagar

In January earlier this year, Shantanu Patnaik and I started Disruption Diaries, a podcast with in-depth deep dives on companies that shape our daily world and those that we find interesting. We have been big fans of Acquired podcast for a while. So, we wanted to build our version of this for Indian companies. We decided to take things slow, only launched on Spotify for the first six months as we learnt more about tools and audio quality, sought feedback on our narrative style and content, and figured out what style works for.  Alongside is the photo during the recording of our first scrappy attempt, we met at a coffee shop and recorded with scrappy mikes gifted by my husband. Since then, we've come a long way... We now record in a small music recording studio near our house for better sound quality.

So far, we've done four episodes - PhonePe, Delhivery, Lenskart.com and Atomberg. We have a fifth one that will drop soon enough, but I'm not spilling secrets just as yet. Anyway, we hear you. We've decided to find you where you are - on your favourite podcasting apps! Whether it's Spotify, Youtube, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Pocket Casts, Castbox or Goodpods. We're there. We will also continue to post our business notes and curated research links on our website for those who are more curious: https://www.disruptiondiaries.in/

We're continuously learning, so would love to hear your feedback - what's working, what isn't? What's your opinion? Which companies should we cover and anything really. Friends and family, of course give us their takes. But I think they tend to tone it down. 'Coz relationships. But don't. Just be straight with us, we love it. Write to us and I promise we respond. Like we did to this kind person who found us on Acquired's slack channel and wrote to us with detailed feedback that helped us improve from the first to the fourth episode.

Humble brag. What do we love about our podcast?

The research process is the fun part. And, the best past. We spend ~20 to 30 hours each listening to podcasts and interviews with the founders of the company, reading news articles and profiles on platforms like Forbes, Fortune, having prep discussions, analyzing earnings calls or DRHPs, and scribing our notes.

Numbers. How are we trending?

Since launch on Spotify, we've had 484 plays, 293 streams, 69 hours of consumption and 64 followers! Thank you, you. We're already humbled. PhonePe, our first episode is the leader with 143 streams but our personal favourite yet is the Atomberg episode. We are hoping to reach a lot more of you soon. So we will continue to publish episodes through this year. And, maybe next. But never at the cost of quality.

So far, our audience is 75% male. And, ~80% of our audience is aged between 28 and 44. Mostly millennials and the mid-management. Perhaps because that's who we are. 90% of our listeners are currently from India, with a few one-offs from USA, Singapore and even Gambia!

Leveling up. We're forever evolving.

Since we started this, we're learning so much more about the Internet economy in India. About founder-mode. How startups operate. The hard work and hustle that goes into building great lasting companies. And, we're in awe. On the topic of the podcast, we've also worked on our conversational flow, reduced the quantum of filler words, incorporated new sections like customer anecdotes, our takes on the company and so much more.

And, we'll continue to improve. We promise that. Until then, do check us out. If you haven't already. I am sure you'll learn something new today. And help us spread the word.
